Kōwhaiwhai designs are a unique Maori art form. They were painted on rafters of whare and also waka paddles. Kōwhaiwhai patterns were traditionally red, black and white.
The colour red represents warmth, blood and life. White represents purity, promise for the future and awakening. And the colour black represents the earth.
