Greenstone adze with Maori wheku (carved face). A beautifully carved greenstone toki. Toki is the Maori word for adze. The adze has the traditional binding, lashing.
And the pendant comes with an adjustable platted cord.
Wheku
Wheku, means ‘carved face’ and represents renowned tipuna (ancestors) of the iwi (tribe).
You can find wheku at the apex of the gable on a Wharenui (Maori meeting house).
Hei toki
The ‘hei toki’ represents strength, authority and mana. In the early days the toki (adze) was used as a tool. Nowadays it is a ceremonial taonga (treasure) representing courage and strength in hard times.
A toki represents great power and the toki were often gifted to warriors and chiefs.
